ARTIST BEHIND TARKA

I was born in Pakistan and grew up between Pakistan and the US. My culture: its food, its textiles, the community that gathers around both has been my safe place for as long as I can remember, and it's where almost everything I make begins.

I have painted since 2012, in gouache, oil pastels, and charcoal. These days it's an iPad and an Apple Pencil, a change that came quietly after my child was born. It mattered less than I expected. The muscle memory of drawing the thing you love most doesn't seem to care what the pencil is made of.

Designer by day, painter at night after my child is asleep. My design work is AI-first but my painting is the opposite, hands over mind, back to the root. The two hold each other in place.

WHY TARKA TONES

Tarka Tones was built out of a passion for food, art, and South Asian culture.

It is a space for making things by hand and celebrating those who do through painting, through events, and through everyday objects designed with an artist's eye. In South Asian culture, the beautiful thing and the useful thing were never separate.

Tarka Tones works in that tradition.

For those of us building homes in the West, this carries weight. A print on a kitchen wall or a room of people who understand the reference without explanation is not decoration it is how a culture stays present in a house.
